It may seem like a silly thing to think about – what you should wear to your DUI hearing in North Carolina. However, it’s a small detail that can make a big impact on your day in court.

If you haven’t spent a lot of time in court in your life, then it’s natural to wonder what you should wear to a court hearing, an event that can have a gigantic impact on your life from that moment on. You want to put your best foot forward, after all.

We understand that not everyone has a fancy wardrobe they can tap into, but there are still a few important guidelines you should follow to make the best impression on your big day in court. Here are a few tips to help you figure out what you should wear to your DUI hearing.

What Should You Wear To Court?

No matter if it’s your first time in court for a DUI or not, the rule of thumb is to put on your best and dress up. You should avoid any clothing with words or images or anything that can be considered even slightly offensive.

Why do you have to dress well? First and foremost, because it’s an official state proceeding. No matter what role you might play in the courtroom – lawyer, defendant, witness, or juror – it’s important to dress in a way that is nicer than you would during a normal day.

This provides a good first impression to the judge. It also displays to them that you are mentally prepared, ready, and willing to attend the hearing.

Dressing up allows you to start right with the judge in your case, and it helps get them to take you seriously. This is especially important if you are asking the court for special dispensation or to consider something exceptional about your case. Dressing up shows that your intentions are good and that you have respect for the court, the judge, and the official proceeding.

What Men Should Wear

If it’s possible, men should wear a suit and tie to court. Basically, your standard dress code for business is followed by those who regularly go to court, such as lawyers. If you cannot get a suit, then at least wear nice pants and a button-down shirt. If you have a tie, throw it into the mix, and wear only brown or black shoes. It’s generally not good to wear boots, sandals, or sneakers to court. If you are coming from work and cannot dress up, then make sure to explain that to the judge as soon as you can.

Another thing to note is that if you have tattoos or wear jewelry, then try to keep them covered in court. It may seem out of date to do so, but many courtroom officials may view you unfavorably because of it. You want to avoid giving the wrong impression.

What Women Should Wear

If you’re a woman going to court, then you should wear a dress, pantsuit, or some type of business skirt or slacks with a nice blouse. The rule to dress for court is to do so conservatively and, certainly, modestly. Avoid any type of top that is low cut or that exposes your midriff. Also, shorts that are too short are a no-no. Dressing in a way that isn’t appropriate may send the message you do not take things seriously.
