A Kinston physician must surrender his license as a part of his sentencing for drug trafficking charges.

Dr. Douglas Elry Watford, 60, of Kinston, had already gotten into hot water in March 2015 after he was disciplined by the North Carolina Medical board for violating controlled substance regulations. That same March, he was charged with violating federal regulations. Then he was arrested in April on six counts of illegally distributing hydrocodone and Xanax. The drugs are considered Schedule II and Schedule IV controlled substances, respectively.

Those convicted of low-level crimes and drug offenses make up a huge amount of the prisoners serving time in local, state, and federal prisons in our state, and their numbers are only increasing. So many low-level offenders are being incarcerated that our prisons are now facing overcrowding and have become an enormous expense for taxpayers. It probably also won’t come as much of a surprise that a disproportionate amount of minorities are being arrested and incarcerated.

Last month, President Barack Obama made a statement about how he feels regarding drug sentencing laws by commuting the prison sentences of 61 inmates throughout the United States.

Three of the 61 inmates granted commutation are from North Carolina:

  • Reginald Wendell Boyd, Jr. of Greensboro was sentenced to 180 months in prison with 8 years of supervised release in 2005 for conspiracy to distribute cocaine hydrochloride and carrying a firearm during and in relation to a drug trafficking crime.
  • Christopher Tim Florence of Chapel Hill was sentenced to 268 months in prison and

Over the past several weeks, there has been an onslaught of drug trafficking news stories in North Carolina. What does this mean for our state and for those who are currently facing drug trafficking charges?

Let’s take a look at a few of the more prominent recent cases.

The legalization of marijuana has been a hot topic in the past few years, with 23 states along with the District of Colombia having laws that legalize marijuana use in some form.

Some states have passed medical marijuana laws. Some states have passed laws legalizing marijuana for recreational use. And some states have decriminalized small amounts of marijuana use by replacing penalties with small fines.

North Carolina doesn’t have any laws legalizing marijuana on the books. But that might change soon.
